My First Earthquake, an up and coming Bay Area band, will be playing at the Coho on Thursday, October 15, 2009. Check out their reviews:

“My First Earthquake has instantly jumped to the front of my playlist and has the talent and emotional mix to remain in the top spot. I could not recommend picking up this album with any more insistence. It’s not a question of if they will be a break-out success, but when.” – College News

“On their new album ‘Downstairs’ My First Earthquake capture the sheer likeability of Metric, the sassy cheek of Blondie and the raving pop of New Young Pony Club, infusing their tunes with more savvy than an Harvard lawyer and the edginess of afternoon tea with the Taliban.” -The Devil Has The Best Tuna

“Downstairs is a display of the do-it-yourself spirit culminated. A notable track on the album is “Vow to Vowels.” With its catchy dance rhythm, organ melody, driving bass, and infectious vocals, one can’t help but get out their seat and shake it a little (or a lot)…The whole album treks across the landscape of tight-synth induced dance pop, making a promise out of the four musicians abilities as a group.” – The Bay Bridged

Laura Gibson at the CoHo 10/9 (6-8pm)

Laura Gibson will be playing at the CoHo this Friday (10/9) from 6-8pm with a three piece band that will include some accordion, some ethereal drumming as exemplified in an amazing single called “Spirited”, and some banjo, and probably a saw – yes a saw.

“One of the year’s most breathtaking albums. Beasts of Seasons is nothing short of a masterpiece, both for its flawless and often haunting execution and for its inspired statements on the human experience. If it’s the sonic equivalent of darkness and what may be lurking there, then Gibson’s fragile voice and plaintively strummed guitar soon emerge as a flicker of light. It’s a mesmerizing contrast, as the curtain rises for Gibson’s beautifully gloomy and arresting meditations on life and death.”

NPR National Public Radio

“A new soundtrack for your next long hike through the enchanted forest.”

Rolling Stone

“Gibson treats syllables with the same patience and loving precision a mosaic maker might put into cutting and arranging his / her tiles…rewards repeat listens.”

Pitchfork
